Summary

The Power of a Consulting Website

Michael Zepersky emphasizes that a consulting website should not just function as a digital business card but should instead be a robust lead-generation tool. He promotes the Consulting Website Mastery Program, a hands-on workshop series aimed at teaching participants how to create impactful website content, drive leads, and position themselves effectively in their markets.

Tom Critchlow's Journey into Consulting

Tom Critchlow shares his unconventional journey into consulting, starting from his work in SEO while helping his brother at the digital agency Distilled. He discusses how working in different roles, including his time at Google, provided him with valuable insights and skills essential for his independent consulting career.

Embedding in Client Organizations

Tom discusses his strategy of embedding himself within client organizations to foster deep connections and understand their unique challenges. By spending substantial time on-site, he positions himself as part of the team, which enhances trust and allows him to provide tailored, effective solutions.

The Importance of Workshops

Tom has found that offering workshops is a successful entry point into client engagements. Workshops allow for immediate rapport-building, help clients articulate their needs, and set the stage for longer-term collaborative projects while delivering high-value work.

Winning Clients Without Focusing on Positioning

Critchlow asserts that positioning is often less significant in the consulting world than the quality of relationships and networks built over time. He advises on the importance of being adaptable and responsive to client needs rather than being rigid about niche definitions.

Overcoming Challenges in Consulting

Both Tom and Michael discuss how consultants can maintain focus, adapt to changing contexts, and ensured that their recommendations are implemented. They stress the need for continuous communication, understanding client priorities, and positioning oneself as a partner rather than just a vendor.

Show notes

Independent strategy consultant Tom Critchlow was at the right place and the right time when he started working alongside his brother who founded a digital agency called Distilled. Doing SEO for national chains in the UK, Amazon UK, and big retailers, they quickly scaled and moved to New York, opening up his eyes to digital marketing and the broader digital landscape that was happening. With the increasingly changing digital landscape, Tom made the leap to go work at Google and eventually started doing digital strategy consulting. Today, Tom talks about his path to growing a solo consulting business, the challenges that come along with it, and the advantages of hiring a one-man consultant versus hiring an agency.
