It is possible to know God’s Word, practice spiritual disciplines, and still allow our hearts to grow hard toward God and people. The Pharisees were serious about obedience, but their rules had become more important than the hurting person standing in front of them. That is what made Jesus angry and grieved: their religious activity had lost its love. Jesus reminds us that genuine obedience should lead us to greater compassion, humility, and love for God and people.
