Proverbs teaches that wise people listen to godly advice, avoid isolation, and intentionally walk with others who can help them grow. We were made to need connection with others. Jesus modeled this through discipleship. He invested a majority of His time in making disciples as He taught them, corrected them, and sent them out to make disciples. The great apostle Paul also wrote and lived out this directive: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV) Paul had Barnabas as a mentor, Silas as a ministry partner, and Timothy as his apprentice. As followers of Jesus, we need people ahead of us in our spiritual journey who can help us grow in our faith, people beside us who can walk with us, and people we can invest in as we help them follow Jesus.
