Summary
Understanding Nicotine and Its Effects
Nicotine, a substance found primarily in tobacco, significantly impacts the brain and body. It is known for enhancing attention, focus, and alertness, along with increasing blood pressure, metabolism, and reducing appetite. Nicotine achieves these effects by boosting neurochemicals like dopamine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine, activating neural pathways that promote alertness. This section explores the various methods of nicotine delivery, including smoking, vaping, and dipping, emphasizing that while nicotine itself has potential cognitive benefits, the delivery methods often lead to severe health consequences, including cancer.
Cognitive Benefits vs. Adverse Effects
Even though nicotine can enhance cognitive function temporarily, the methods of delivery, especially smoking and vaping, carry significant health risks. The podcast details the duality of nicotine: its capacity to support cognitive function through mechanisms that involve dopamine and acetylcholine, contrasted with the harsh realities of its connections to various forms of cancer and cardiovascular issues due to the harmful substances found in tobacco products. The discussion also highlights societal trends, especially among youth, regarding the rising acceptance and use of nicotine products.
Strategies for Quitting Smoking and Vaping
The podcast presents several strategies for quitting smoking and nicotine consumption, stressing that awareness of the withdrawal process is critical. It highlights clinical hypnosis, as developed by Dr. David Spiegel, noting its impressive success rates for smoking cessation. Other methods discussed include pharmacological options like bupropion (Wellbutrin) and nicotine replacement therapies. The importance of an individualized approach to quitting is stressed, alongside the suggestion of using an app called Reveri for hypnosis-related techniques, as well as adjusting dosage and timing of nicotine products to foster a successful transition away from nicotine.
The Withdrawal Phase and Homeostasis
Listeners are educated on the physiological changes following nicotine withdrawal, notably the risk of increased cravings and adverse feelings during the initial week after quitting. The episode discusses the concept of biological homeostasis, explaining how the brain adjusts to habitual nicotine use by lowering its baseline mood and alertness levels, which can worsen the experience of withdrawal. The importance of maintaining dopamine levels through healthy lifestyle changes and strategies is underscored as imperative to successfully navigating through these challenges.

Show notes
In this episode, I explain how nicotine impacts the brain and body, including its potent ability to enhance attention, focus, and alertness, increase blood pressure and metabolism and reduce appetite. I discuss nicotine’s ability to increase the action of neurochemicals, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine and activate sympathetic (alertness-promoting) neural circuits. I also discuss common nicotine delivery methods, such as cigarettes, vaping, dip, and snuff, and how they each create their own unique experience and how they, but not nicotine itself, cause cancer and other adverse health effects. I also explain science-based tools to permanently quit smoking cigarettes or vaping, including peer-reviewed clinical hypnosis tools, antidepressants, and alternative nicotine replacement (patches, lozenges, gums etc.). As nicotine is one of the most widely used substances with billions of users — most of whom report wanting to quit — this episode ought to be of interest to former/current nicotine users, those who want to quit smoking or vaping and/or those interested in learning the biology behind how nicotine impacts the brain and body.
