Celebration of DJ Shadow's 30th Anniversary and Episode Return

The episode then pays homage to DJ Shadow's debut album, 'Introducing,' celebrating its 30th anniversary with a focus on his tour that highlights songs from that album. Herway reminisces about how the album changed his life, mentioning that he first made a podcast episode with DJ Shadow ten years ago for the 20th anniversary. He notes the release of a special vinyl edition and emphasizes the significance of the album in reshaping hip-hop and electronic music, listing its accolades and influence.

Historical and Creative Inspiration behind 'Introducing'

DJ Shadow, born Josh Davis, describes how a record store in Sacramento served as his creative muse during the production of 'Introducing.' He recounts how browsing records there helped break through creative blocks and led to discovering the drum samples used in the album, sourced from a European jazz record. Davis discusses his approach to sampling, emphasizing the importance of reassembling breakbeats from multiple sources to create a 'super-version' that forms the rhythmic backbone of his tracks.

Sampling Philosophy and Cultural Context

Davis elaborates on the culture of sampling rooted in hip-hop history, where DJs protected the origins of their breakbeats. He talks about balancing this secretive tradition with more obvious, accessible samples, like Björk’s, which he deliberately slowed down to evoke melancholy and fit his mood. He discusses how he sought to blend hidden craftsmanship with intentional choices that are recognizable but reinterpreted, reflecting his approach to creativity and homage.

The Creation of 'Mutual Slump' and Personal Elements

Davis explains the specific process behind 'Mutual Slump,' including his use of the Björk sample layered with drums and sounds that evoke mood and tension. He shares how he recorded his wife, Lisa, in an unusual home studio setup, describing the physical constraints of the space and his intent to capture her natural voice without over-directing her. Davis emphasizes that her vocal recordings add a personal and emotional depth to the track, highlighting his commitment to authentic collaboration.

Incorporation of Jazz and Experimental Sounds

Davis describes how various improvisational sounds, like a saxophone, flute, and vibraphone, were integrated into the track. He discusses using a needle drop technique to make jazz elements sound more unhinged and raw. The process of tuning samples and bending instruments to match each other reflects his desire to create dynamic, constantly evolving arrangements that surprise listeners. He notes that these elements were added to evoke feelings of despair and unpredictability.

Reflections on the Artistic Process and Technology**

Davis reflects on the technical challenges and serendipity involved in tuning and balancing his samples before the advent of modern pitch-shifting tools. He states that his goal was to produce complex, layered music that remains emotionally engaging and different every eight bars, avoiding intellectual detachment. His aim was to impress other producers and to push the boundaries of what was possible with the technology of his time, emphasizing creativity over technical perfection.

Herway wraps up the episode by noting the significance of the 30th anniversary of 'Introducing' and highlighting DJ Shadow’s current tour. Show notes

30 years ago, DJ Shadow released his debut album, Entroducing… and it changed my life. I listened to it so much. And when I first started Song Exploder, he was on my list of dream guests. And then 10 years ago, that dream came true, and I got to make an episode with him in honor of the 20th anniversary of the album. Well, now it’s the 30th anniversary, and DJ Shadow is on tour this fall, celebrating it with a set that just focuses on songs from Endtroducing… And, there’s a special edition of the album on vinyl. So, in the spirit of all that, I wanted to go back to this episode of Song Exploder from back in 2016.
