Summary
The Role of Robotics in Infrastructure Maintenance
This episode delves deep into the critical role of robotics in maintaining and repairing the sprawling landscape of America's aging infrastructure. With an infrastructure estimated at a staggering $5 trillion, the conversation emphasizes how Gecko Robotics is leveraging advanced robotics and AI to understand and monitor critical assets such as bridges, electrical grids, and naval vessels. Troy Demmer discusses their various robots that can climb, swim, fly, and more—each crafted to gather crucial data in real-time without disrupting operations.
Digital Twins and Predictive Maintenance
A significant portion of the podcast is dedicated to the concept of 'digital twins'—advanced digital models of physical assets that allow for enhanced predictive maintenance. Troy explains how his team at Gecko constructs what they call 'rich asset models' which integrate various data layers from actual performance metrics to historical design specifications. This digital representation facilitates improved decision-making, enabling companies to avoid costly failures and to operate with greater efficiency.
AI's Transformative Impact on Industrial Insights
The discussion highlights the burgeoning potential of AI within the industrial sector, emphasizing how it transforms raw data into actionable insights. As more assets are monitored and the data pool expands, AI can learn and refine its predictive capabilities, improving the understanding of asset behavior over time. This sets the stage for a future where decision-making leans heavily on sophisticated AI models that can foresee issues before they arise.
Collaborations and Ecosystem Building
Gecko Robotics is strategically building an ecosystem that embraces API connectivity, allowing other robotics companies to integrate with their software. This collaboration fosters a centralized system where various data streams can be contextualized and utilized for enhanced asset management. The podcast also showcases specific partnerships, including one with Anybot, which brings unique robotic solutions into Gecko's platform for a more comprehensive approach to data collection and analysis.

Troy Demmer is Co-founder of Gecko Robotics, who use a fleet of advanced robots and AI software to help government and heavy industry maintain and manage their critical infrastructure. From navy vessels to power plants to dams, Gecko collects data on and delivers insights across over 500,000 of the worlds most important and critical infrastructure. It has developed a digital layer of intelligence over the built world to improve performance, prevent breakage and failures, and increasingly predict how an asset will behave in the future. The company has raised over $220M from top investors including Founders Fund and US Innovative Technology Fund. Gecko’s co-founder and Chief Product Officer is Troy Demmer. A graduate from Carnegie Mellon University, Troy was previously in the healthcare industry working at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center before launching his first startup 360Showings, which 3D rendered homes for the real estate market. Along with his work at Gecko Troy also runs his own venture firm, First Order Fund, which invests in early stage startups building moats using data.
