Summary

The Future of Coding

In this episode, Daniel Darling explores the transformative potential of AI in software development with Merrill Lutsky, CEO of Graphite. The discussion highlights how AI accelerates coding processes, particularly in reviewing, testing, and deploying software, addressing bottlenecks that impede productivity.

The Role of Graphite

Merrill shares insights into Graphite's influence on the developer ecosystem since its founding in 2020. With over $70M raised and a clientele including Shopify and Figma, Graphite has developed a unique tool, Diamond, that reviews code changes swiftly, significantly reducing wait times and enhancing productivity.

AI and Developer Productivity

The podcast dives deep into AI's ability to enhance developer efficiency, with statistics indicating AI-enabled developers can produce up to 30% more code. Merrill emphasizes the importance of adapting the code review process to keep up with increased output from AI-assisted coding.

Changing Developers' Roles

As AI tools take on more coding tasks, the role of the developer is projected to evolve. Rather than focusing solely on coding, developers will increasingly prioritize higher-level tasks such as architecture and user experience, prompting a shift in required skills in the workforce.

Future Workflows in Software Development

Looking to 2030, the conversation anticipates a future where AI handles the bulk of development tasks, allowing developers to curate and iterate software in real-time, thereby increasing responsiveness to user needs and enhancing the adaptability of software products.

Building Trust in AI Systems

Merrill discusses the challenges surrounding trust in AI systems, particularly in enterprises where human oversight during critical workflows remains necessary. The conversation reflects on the delicate balance between automation and accountability in code review.

Show notes

The future of coding. We cover multiplying engineering output, vibe coding bottlenecks, agents as reviewer, AI roll-ups, and the future of developing software.

Merrill Lutsky is co-founder and CEO of Graphite, bringing AI-acceleration and automation to code review. Founded in 2020 out of New York, Graphite has become a key part of the developer ecosystem — as more code is generated with AI, they enable developers to scale the evaluation, testing, and review process before it is released. A growing bottleneck that has become incredibly important. The startup has raised over $70M from leading VC’s such Accel, A16Z, Menlo as well as a receiving a strategic investment from model provider Anthropic. Last year Graphite grew its revenue 20X and is trusted by over 45,000 developers at top engineering organizations such as Shopify and Figma.

His second startup, Merrill has helped develop and manage software products for high output engineering companies such as Square, Oscar Insurance, and SelfMade. He holds a degree in Applies Math and Economics from Harvard.
