Summary
The Reality of Parenting Different Children
Heather reflects on the often unspoken challenge many parents face—imagining what their child will be like versus the reality of the child's unique personality and needs. She emphasizes the importance of embracing each child's differences instead of wishing for a different one. The story of her experience in preschool highlights how every child is wired differently, and the key is to adopt a loving, observant approach that seeks to understand their individual needs. The main theme is shifting parent expectations from control and fitting into molds to understanding and supporting the child's unique personality as designed by God.
Parenting with Compassion and Curiosity
Heather shares insights from Sally Clarkson and her son Nathan about seeing beyond behavior to understanding the child's internal world. They discuss the importance of parenting with compassion, recognizing children's emotional needs, and the power of small acts of kindness—like a walk after dinner—that can profoundly impact children's moods and attitudes. The conversation underscores that many behaviors, such as defiance or impulsiveness, are rooted in internal struggles or wiring and require empathetic responses rather than punishment. The main message is to parent from the inside out, seeking to meet the emotional needs of each child with curiosity and love.
Embracing Differences and Finding Strength in them
A core theme of the episode is viewing differences as strengths rather than deficiencies. The Clarkson story of Superman illustrates how hardships and differences can be conduits for becoming who God made us to be. Heather emphasizes that God’s design includes our children’s unique wiring, which can include challenges like ADHD or OCD, but these are not mistakes. She discusses how to turn perceived weaknesses into superpowers by understanding that God uses a child's unique traits to shape them and us. The importance of fostering self-acceptance and recognizing that God’s purpose is at work in all children, regardless of their diagnoses or differences, is a central message.
Practical Advice for Moms of Differently Wired Children
Heather offers practical guidance for moms who feel overwhelmed or isolated by their child's differences. She encourages patience, observing their child's cues, getting evaluations when needed, and seeking professional support without letting diagnoses define the child. She advocates for trusting God’s plan, setting love-based boundaries, and balancing grace and discipline. The episode emphasizes that parenting is a journey of dependence on God's wisdom, and that moms are equipped for this journey through prayer, community, and trusting God's design for their children.
The Value of Support and Self-Care
Recognizing the emotional toll of raising children with special needs, Heather discusses the importance of taking breaks and practicing self-care. She highlights sponsors like Honeylove, which offers comfortable lingerie to help moms feel cared for and supported in their daily routines. The episode encourages moms to seek out community, professional help, and manageable routines that allow for renewal—because caregiving, especially for neurodiverse children, is a marathon, not a sprint.

Show notes
As moms, it's so easy to compare our children to everyone else's. We wonder why one child seems to thrive in situations where another struggles. We ask ourselves if we're doing something wrong or if we'd somehow be a better parent if our child were different.
But what if God intentionally gave you the child you have?
In this episode, I'm talking about what it looks like to parent the child God created instead of the child we expected. Everyone has a unique personality, unique strengths, unique struggles, and a unique purpose. Our job isn't to force them into a mold, it’s to become students of who God made them to be.
I share an episode with Sally Clarkson and her son Nathan about how our parenting often changes when we begin looking beyond behavior and start asking what our children truly need. Sometimes what looks like defiance is anxiety. Sometimes what looks like impulsiveness may be part of how God uniquely wired them. As parents, we have the opportunity to respond with curiosity, compassion, and wisdom instead of frustration.
We'll also discuss the reality of raising children with ADHD, OCD, sensory challenges, autism, or other forms of neurodivergence. Receiving a diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't define your child. It simply gives you a better map for understanding how they experience the world. God isn't surprised by your child's wiring, and He certainly isn't limited by it.
Remember, God didn't make a mistake when He gave your child to you. He chose you to be their mom for a reason, and He promises to give you the wisdom and grace you need for every step of the journey.
