Key takeaways

  • Faith that only works when life is easy isn’t genuine faith; true faith endures through trials.
  • Remaining steadfast in faith requires establishing your heart in Jesus as Lord, regardless of circumstances.
  • Biblical patience is active faithfulness, not passive resignation, waiting trustingly for God to act.
  • Waiting on God often involves trusting beneath the surface, like a farmer trusting seeds are growing underground.
  • Honest community and confession are essential to spiritual healing and authentic faith.
  • Praying boldly and confessing sins open the door to God’s grace and healing in our lives.
  • God’s work often happens in unseen ways beneath the surface, so trust the process even when you don’t see results.
  • The final measure of faith is whether we stay anchored to Jesus when life gets real.

Summary

Introduction and the Challenge of James

Pastor Chris Zauner begins by reflecting on how the book of James has personally challenged him throughout the series, especially in standing up for his faith and living it out authentically. He emphasizes that James is a direct and intense letter, not subtle in its tone, confronting believers about the disconnect that can occur between what they profess and how they live. James relentlessly calls out the lie that faith can be merely mental without corresponding action, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating faith through deeds, especially under difficulty.

The Endurance of Faith and the Call to Finish Well

Chris stresses that starting strong in faith is easy but finishing well requires conviction and perseverance, using marriage vows as an analogy—people commit until death, not just for a moment. He encourages the congregation to be steadfast until Christ’s return, recognizing that life’s hardships—disappointments, suffering, unmet expectations—test the authenticity of one’s faith. Using the metaphor of the farmer patiently waiting for crops, Chris illustrates that God’s work beneath the surface often takes time to show results, urging believers to trust the process and remain anchored in Jesus despite the delays.

The Importance of Establishing Our Hearts in Christ's Truth

The message emphasizes the need for believers to establish their hearts—essentially to decide and anchor themselves in the truthful reality of Jesus’ lordship. Using the analogy of an anchor that keeps a ship from being carried away by storms, Chris encourages Christians to declare Jesus as Lord in every circumstance—whether suffering, disappointment, or confusion—so that their feelings and situations do not determine their spiritual destination. The call is to trust in Jesus’ identity and sovereignty even when the physical and emotional signs suggest otherwise.

Practical Steps of Honest Faith and Community Protection

James advocates for honest transparency in the church community, urging believers not to grumble or complain against each other, recognizing that suffering can lead to irritability and criticism. Chris warns that hardship can deform a person if they react in bitterness, cynicism, or suspicion, which can deform their faith. Instead, he urges believers to bring their real lives—suffering, success, sin, and struggles—directly to God through prayer, praise, confession, and calling elders for prayer, emphasizing that faith requires honesty and community support to thrive.

The Power of Prayer and Confession in Faith

James underscores prayer as a fundamental act of faith, inviting believers to ask boldly for wisdom, healing, and help, trusting that God responds. Chris highlights that prayer isn’t about manipulation but a trust that God can and will intervene. James also stresses the importance of confessing sins to one another and praying for healing, framing it as a pathway to spiritual freedom. The message challenges Christians to abandon superficial faith that masks struggles and instead embrace vulnerability, knowing that God’s grace and healing are available when darkness is brought into the light.

Running Toward God with Repentance and the Gospel’s Hope

The sermon concludes by emphasizing that repentance isn’t shame-based fleeing from God but a running toward Him motivated by His grace, exemplified through the cross. Chris reminds the congregation that Jesus knew all our worst parts and still sacrificed Himself, making authentic repentance and confession possible and safe. The final call is for believers to be honest with God and others about their sins and struggles, trusting that through transparency and prayer, healing and transformation will follow. He encourages a communal response—coming forward, praying, and trusting God’s abundant grace to heal what is broken.

What does real faith look like when life gets hard?

In When Life Gets Real, Pastor Chris Zauner closes out our Show Me Your Faith series through the book of James with a powerful message about enduring faith, honest repentance, prayer, healing, and staying anchored in Jesus when life doesn’t go according to plan.

Throughout the book of James, we’ve been confronted with one consistent challenge: faith is more than what we say we believe—it is revealed in how we live. And in James 5, that challenge becomes deeply personal.

What happens when you’re waiting on God and nothing seems to be changing? What happens when prayers feel unanswered, suffering continues, relationships become difficult, or disappointment begins to wear down your faith?

James tells us to remain steadfast.

Faith waits without walking away.

Like a farmer who plants seed and patiently waits for growth, we are called to trust God even when we cannot yet see what He is doing beneath the surface. Just because something looks buried doesn’t mean it is dead. Sometimes God is doing His deepest work long before the fruit becomes visible.

Pastor Chris challenges us to “establish your hearts”—to become so anchored in the truth of who Jesus is that circumstances, emotions, suffering, and disappointment do not determine where we end up.

The storm may still come.

The questions may still remain.

The waiting may continue.

But Jesus is still Lord.

James also reminds us that hardship can shape us if we’re not careful. Pain can become bitterness. Disappointment can become cynicism. Betrayal can become suspicion. And isolation can make fear, shame, temptation, and discouragement grow louder.

That’s why biblical faith doesn’t hide.

Real faith brings real life to God.

If you’re suffering—pray.

If you’re joyful—praise.

If you’re sick—ask others to pray.

If you’ve sinned—confess.

James gives no picture of a fake Christianity where we pretend everything is fine while falling apart inside. Instead, he calls the church into honesty, community, confession, prayer, repentance, and healing.

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” — James 5:16

Some of us want healing without honesty, freedom without confession, and transformation without bringing anything into the light. But sin grows in secrecy.

The gospel invites us into something better.

Jesus already knows the worst parts of our story—and He went to the cross anyway. Repentance is not running away from God in shame. Repentance is running toward God because of His grace.

As we conclude this series, the final challenge of James is simple but profound:

Show me your faith when life gets real.

When you’re waiting.

When you’re hurting.

When you’re disappointed.

When you need prayer.

When you need to confess.

When you need to repent.

When you don’t understand what God is doing.

Will you still trust Him?

Will you stay anchored?

Will you bring your real life into the light and allow Jesus to heal what you’ve been trying to hide?
