Summary

The Impact of Rising Costs on Small Communities and Food Pantries

This section highlights how inflation and increased prices are affecting everyday Americans, particularly those relying on food banks like Betty Luz Pantry in Pennsylvania. The pantry's volunteers, including Chris Page, observe a surge in need due to inflation, increased grocery costs, and cuts to food assistance programs like SNAP. Families are stretched thin, turning more often to food banks to cope with higher grocery prices, which have increased due to broader economic factors such as war and inflation. The segment underscores the real struggles of typical families trying to make ends meet amidst rising living costs.

Voter Perspectives on Inflation and Politics in Pennsylvania's 7th District

This part focuses on voter sentiments in a key district in Pennsylvania, where inflation and the cost of living are top concerns. Voters like Heather and Kobe Byram discuss how inflation has affected their family — from grocery shopping to gas prices — and their support for incumbent Congressman Ryan McKenzie, a Republican. The voters attribute rising prices partly to policies during the Biden administration and international issues like the war in Iran, while also acknowledging personal struggles, despite supporting Trump. This section illustrates the political landscape shaped by inflation and how it influences voter behavior and candidate support.

Congressional Candidates' Strategies and Debates on Addressing Inflation

This section features interviews with candidates vying for Pennsylvania’s 7th District seat, particularly Republican Ryan McKenzie and Democrat Bob Brooks. McKenzie emphasizes efforts to improve affordability through legislation like tax credits and healthcare measures, arguing that inflation resulted from recent policies and global events. Conversely, Democratic candidate Brooks, endorsed by prominent figures like Bernie Sanders, campaigns on addressing the hardships faced by working-class voters, with a focus on healthcare and reversing certain Trump-era policies. The dialogue underscores the political debate on how best to tackle inflation and the role of government policies in alleviating economic pressures.

Show notes

Inflation may have sunk the Democratic Party at the ballot box in 2024. But high prices at the grocery store and the gas station are now a problem for the GOP. According to the Labor Department, consumer prices in April saw their biggest year-over-year jump in three years and gasoline prices were up 28% from a year earlier. For our special What’s News series The Cost-of-Living Election, WSJ national politics reporter Sabrina Siddiqui met with voters and congressional candidates in and around Allentown, Pa., to uncover what stubborn inflation could mean for the area’s primary election this Tuesday. She then speaks with the sitting congressman for Pennsylvania’s 7th congressional district, Republican Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, about what he’s doing to address the rising cost of living.
