Brand Loyalty in HVAC

Bryan discusses the notion of brand loyalty in the HVAC industry, comparing it to preferences in other sectors like tools and cars. He highlights that attachment to a brand often stems from personal experience, local support, and marketing. He reveals his long-standing preference for Carrier and acknowledges the importance of installation quality but insists on other factors to consider as well.

Factors Influencing Equipment Choice

The conversation shifts to what factors play a significant role in selecting HVAC equipment. Bryan emphasizes the importance of local support, availability of parts, and manufacturer responsiveness. He advises contractors to prioritize equipment with reliable local distribution and solid warranties, pointing out that regional preferences and experiences shape equipment choices differently.

Personal Experiences and Recommendations

While Bryan is hesitant to pick clear 'winners and losers,' he shares insights into brands he values, such as Viper in the chemical space and Copeland compressors. He explains that personal experiences should guide professionals' equipment decisions rather than broad generalizations. Bryan urges HVAC techs to approach new products carefully and consider their market dynamics.

Show notes

In this short podcast episode, Bryan answers a listener-submitted question: what is the best brand of equipment for residential new construction?

A lot of people have their own personal preferences when it comes to brands, whether that's with equipment, tools, or even cars. However, when it comes to HVAC equipment, there are a lot of factors that come into play, especially as far as local support is concerned. Are the distributors and territory managers accessible? Reliable? Bryan's personal preferences deal a lot with American (or at least North American) manufacturing and the strength of their local support in the Central Florida market.

Some manufacturers have excellent base products but weak product lines, and others have weak base products but great specialized equipment. These judgments come from personal experience, and that's especially true of large manufacturers. Bryan recommends taking a measured, slow approach to products you deal with and then choosing the one that works best for your market and customers. You may find yourself gravitating towards equipment with certain components (like Copeland compressors, for example). You may gravitate towards manufacturers that take feedback about their products and have great local support. The "best brand" really depends on your experiences, values, and business needs.
