They explain the context of this sermon as part of the Gospel of Matthew and emphasize the importance of understanding Jesus in relation to the Hebrew Bible.

Exploring the Hebrew Bible

Tim Mackie elaborates on the connection between the Hebrew Bible and Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. He breaks down the Hebrew Bible into three main parts: the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings (Ketuvim), explaining how these books lay the foundations for the principles that Jesus expounds upon in his sermon. This segment establishes a clear link between Old Testament scripture and New Testament teachings.

Repentance and the Kingdom of God

The concept of repentance is central to Jesus' message. Through the re-examination of Matthew 4:17, the hosts discuss the original meanings behind 'repentance' in the Hebrew and Greek contexts, suggesting that it calls for a transformation of mindset or a turning around in light of the Kingdom of God approaching.

The Structure of the Hebrew Bible

Jon and Tim dive into how the organization of the Hebrew Bible is distinct and how this impacts the interpretation of scripture. The discussion includes the significant difference in book order between the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, shedding light on how this affects expectations for the reader.

Prophetic Fulfillment in Jesus' Teachings

Here, the hosts discuss how Jesus fulfills the prophetic hope of the Old Testament. The sermon acts as a revelation pointing to a new covenant, particularly referencing Jeremiah and Ezekiel, showcasing how Jesus embodies the historical longing for a renewed and righteous community under God's reign.

The Sermon as Wisdom Literature

In this section, Michelle, Jon, and Tim analyze the wisdom literature's influence on the Sermon on the Mount. They underscore how Jesus’ delivery of teachings mirrors the wisdom sayings found within the Ketuvim, urging listeners to meditate on his words to discern deeper truths.

Sermon on the Mount E2 – As a Jewish rabbi, Jesus was immersed in the Hebrew Bible, or what Christians often call the Old Testament. The Hebrew Bible tells the story of God working with ancient Israel to bring about his Kingdom. And in the New Testament, Jesus claimed that God’s Kingdom was at long last arriving in him. In this episode, Tim and Jon walk through the three parts of the Hebrew Bible, showing how they connect to what Jesus teaches in the Sermon on the Mount. Plus, Michelle, Dan, and Aaron go on a field trip to look at a Torah scroll to better understand how the Hebrew Bible is designed.
